The TC-PLC has been nominating distinguished TC-PLC members for the IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer program. Details on the selection criteria can be found here.

TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award & TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award

TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: This award shall recognize members of the Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (TC-PLC) who have a distinguished record of service to the PLC community. Such service includes initiation of and participation in technical and administrative activities that foster the development of PLC at large, leadership roles within the TC-PLC, organization of conferences and workshops, and promotion of TC-PLC activities and interests in the broader research community.

TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: This award shall recognize members of the Technical Committee on Power Line Communications who have made significant technical and/or business contributions through inter-disciplinary research and/or application of PLC.

The awards (recognition plaques) are presented at a ceremony during the annual IEEE ISPLC.

Selection criteria

The awards are decided by the ANC and made annually, provided that suitable candidates have been identified. Nominations will be solicited by email from the TC-PLC members immediately after GLOBECOM with nominations due 1 March of the year the awards are to be made. The nomination should include a concise rationale, be supported by at least two TC-PLC members, and be sent to the Chair of the Awards & Nominations Committee (ANC). Recommendations can also be made by the ANC. Current ANC Committee members and the TC-PLC Chair cannot be nominated.

Recipients

  • 2021 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Alberto Sendín, for his long record of contributions to the analysis, design, deployment and standardization of PLC technology. In particular, he was instrumental in the promotion, at an international scale, of both broadband and narrowband PLC technologies for various applications ranging from Internet access, in the early years, to smart grid use cases.
  • 2021 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Moisés Vidal Ribeiro, for the organization of one edition of the IEEE ISPLC conference and his effort to promote TC-PLC activities in Latin America.
  • 2020 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Kaveh Razazian, for his work for G3-PLC. During his time at MAXIM, Kaveh was the key person on the design and implementation of the PHY-Layer of G3-PLC. Since he moved to Sagemcom, Kaveh focuses on all issues to get Smart Metering Systems based on G3-PLC in operation and delivers important contributions to improve the system.
  • 2020 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Cédric Lavenu, EDF R&D, for his long-term engagement in international PLC standardization targeting at the specification of narrowband communication protocols and contributing to the definition of EMC standards taking into account the needs of PLC systems.
  • 2019 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Eugen Mayer, for pioneering contributions to the development and application of broadband power line communications technology. Andrea M. Tonello for his contributions to the characterization and modelling of power line signal propagation and noise.
  • 2019 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Andrea M. Tonello, for his many years of exemplary leadership and service to the power line communications community, fostering the connection between academic research and industry activities and driving outreach and educational initiatives.
  • 2018 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Alfredo Sanz, for being a pioneer in developing modern power line communication technology and its transfer into practical and standardized systems which have been deployed millions of times around the globe.
  • 2018 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Anil Mengi, for his long term technical and organizational support of the ISPLC conference series, chairing the subcommittee on PLC regulations, his dedication and significant contributions in the PLC standardization organisations (IEEE, ITU-T, FNN, CENELEC, etc.), in industrial PLC communities (G3-PLC) and his active role in the application of PLC systems on the market.
  • 2017 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Paul A. Brown for his pioneering work in the Power Line Telecommunication (PLT) field including the development of the first, CT2 based, digital telephony access system operating over a low voltage electricity distribution network.
  • 2017 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Jiang Song for his long term support of the ISPLC conference series, co-chairing the TPC of ISPLC 2012, contributions to the TC-PLC, and his engagement in PLC  standardization in China.
  • 2016 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Michael Koch for his recognized leadership in the EMC standardization and regulation issues, and for leading many PLC groups, such as IEEE 1901.2 EMC-Subgroup or in CENELEC. He extensively contributed in the establishment of PLC systems on the market such as BB-PLC and G3-PLC (150-500kHz) by continuously addressing and clarifying many EMC challenges and legal issues, esp. challenging Radio Amateurs. He has actively participated in many standardization activities, such as IEEE 1901, 1901.2 and 1905.1 and led many IEEE international conferences, such as General Co-Chair IEEE SmartGridComm 2015. He has been publishing regularly research papers on PLC and teaching PLC since many years at the university Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
  • 2016 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Gerd Bumiller for his great dedication and significant contributions both technical and organizational. He has been the organizer of both WSPLC and ISPLC and covered active roles in the committee (beeing in particular secretary).
  • 2015 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Lutz Lampe for his distinguished research and contributions introducing and fostering the application of modern communication and signal processing methods for PLC and his leadership in compiling the most comprehensive text on power line communications available today.
  • 2015 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Lutz Lampe for many years of exemplary service contributions and leadership in the broader PLC community and the IEEE TC-PLC.
  • 2015 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Shinji Tsuzuki for outstanding research and educational activities  in  the field of Power Line Communications and for  continued contributions to the activities of the IEEE TC-PLC from the early years of the ISPLC.
  • 2014 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Jim LeClare for his contributions to narrowband PLC standardization.
  • 2014 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Francisco Cañete for his contributions to PLC channel modeling.
  • 2013 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Hendrik Ferreira for his distinguished research and educational contributions in the power line communications field and for his leadership in the organization of the International Symposium on Power Line Communications (ISPLC).
  • 2013 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: Don Shaver for his tireless role, leadership and efforts in the design and standardization of narrowband power line communications for a variety of applications from smart metering to automotive applications to in-home energy management.
  • 2012 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: prof. Masaaki Katayama for his distinguished research and educational contributions in the power line communications field, for his leadership in the organization of the International Symposium on Power Line Communications (ISPLC), and for his outstanding participation in the activities of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Power Line Communications.
  • 2011 TC-PLC Inter-disciplinary Research and Application Award: prof. Klaus Dostert for his pioneering and extensive work on characterization and modeling of power line communication channels, which has had a deep and wide impact on the understanding and implementation of data communications over power lines.
  • 2011 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Stefano Galli for founding the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (TC-PLC), his extraordinary leadership, dedication, and vision as TC-PLC Chair, and for promoting PLC in the international scientific and industrial communities through special issues in journals and magazines, organization of conferences, and active participation in PLC standardization activities.
  • 2010 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Ralf Lehnert for his distinguished contributions to the activities of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (PLC), including leadership in the organization of IEEE ISPLC and the Vertical Workshop on PLC, and many years of outstanding research and educational contributions to the field of PLC.
  • 2008 TC-PLC Outstanding Service Award: Gen Marubayashi for many years of continued leadership in the field of power line communications (PLC), for his instrumental role in developing an international PLC community, and for his pivotal contributions to establishing an annual international PLC conference, which has evolved into the IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications.
  • 2006 ISPLC Achievement Award: Han Vinck for his fundamental role in creating what is today the most important technical conference in the field of power line communications and for facilitating the transition of ISPLC to a fully financially and technically sponsored IEEE Communications Society conference.
